ARKANSAS – The Arkansas Department of Commerce, alongside Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, has announced a landmark allocation of $1,024,303,993.86 from the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program. Administered by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, these funds are set to revolutionize broadband access across Arkansas, addressing affordability and digital skills needs statewide.
“This announcement will be transformational for Arkansas,” said Governor Sanders. “With more than $1 billion now at our state’s disposal to fund broadband access, we will finally be able to close the digital divide between rural and urban Arkansas. This puts every part of our state on an equal playing field and unlocks a world of potential for businesses, schools, and everyday Arkansans.”
The BEAD funding prioritizes closing the broadband gap for an estimated 215,000 homes and businesses across Arkansas. This presents a significant opportunity for Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to expand their service areas and reach new customers.
Funds from the BEAD program can also enhance high-speed internet access at critical community institutions like hospitals, libraries, and schools. This opens avenues for partnerships with local governments and community organizations.
Beyond infrastructure, the BEAD program addresses digital skills and affordability, ensuring that Arkansas’ workforce can fully benefit from expanded broadband access.
The Arkansas State Broadband Office, housed within the Arkansas Department of Commerce, will administer the BEAD funds. The office is required to submit a five- year action plan and other documentation to NTIA by the end of 2023.
Collaboration is key to maximizing the impact of BEAD funds. Forming alliances with local governments, community organizations, and other service providers can amplify your efforts.
The BEAD program is part of a broader effort to improve broadband access nationwide, complemented by other federal programs such as the FCC’s Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP).
